Artist Statement

Inspiration sparks and images overtake my mind. I rush into the exploration of these images with as little planning as possible, letting that spark carry me through the act of making. The real challenge is sustaining that initial burst of creativity, but thankfully I've found that mixed media helps keep that spark alive.

I am magnetically attracted to the act of playing and getting my hands dirty, possessing an endless love for the sculptural mediums that allow me to be expressive in a tactile way. Often working in foam, clay, and dirt, I'm also drawn to practices of intense focus and attention to detail such as oil painting, hand-poke tattoo, and miniature building. I crave the push and pull between medium and making as I mutter and dance around my pieces, letting them tell me how they should be completed. This duality of art making energizes my practice, in turn, allowing me to combat my struggle to articulate myself in mere words.

My work allows me to pinpoint my identity all while I grapple with my tendency to police and alienate my inner world. A form of reflection and reconciliation, my art explores absurdity, memory, the body, queerness, and simulated spaces. These preoccupations allow space for me to grieve the loss of people, places, and memories I can no longer retrieve. Because of this, I latch onto mental images - dreamt and constructed memories of a reality once encountered. Ultimately, through mixed media, I create revealing self portrayals and surreal reflections of the world around me with my ever-evolving artistic practice.
